Ultrasound examinations performed by a radiologist

About the service

Ultrasound (US) is a safe, non-invasive imaging method. Ultrasound examinations are performed by a specialist in radiology and diagnostic imaging.

Examinations are available for adults and children from 11 years of age.

Who it’s for

  • Adults
  • Children from 11 years of age

Scope

  • Breast ultrasound
  • Abdominal ultrasound
  • Thyroid and salivary gland ultrasound
  • Soft tissue ultrasound

Breast ultrasound

Breast ultrasound assesses the breast tissue and the axillary lymph nodes. It is the examination of choice in women under 40 and a complement to mammography in older patients; it is also performed in men. Indications include a palpable lump, pain, nipple discharge, follow-up of previously described changes, and prevention.

The examination takes about 15–20 minutes and needs no preparation; it is best performed in the first half of the cycle. The patient receives the result with a report after the examination.

Breast ultrasound vs mammography

We do not perform mammography at Sonar Clinic. Mammography is an X-ray examination recommended in screening programmes for women of a certain age; breast ultrasound is an ultrasound examination that is better at assessing the dense breasts of younger women and complements mammography. The doctor decides which examination is appropriate based on age, symptoms and previous results.

Thyroid ultrasound

Thyroid ultrasound assesses the size of the gland, its structure and the presence of nodules, as well as the lymph nodes of the neck. It is performed for abnormal hormone results, a palpable enlargement of the thyroid, nodules, and as part of follow-up. The examination needs no preparation and takes about 15 minutes.

Abdominal ultrasound

The examination assesses the liver, gallbladder, pancreas, spleen, kidneys, aorta and bladder. You need to fast for the examination (about 6 hours without food), avoid gas-producing foods the day before, and arrive with a full bladder. Detailed instructions are given when you book.

Salivary gland and soft tissue ultrasound

Salivary gland ultrasound is performed for swelling or pain in the area of the salivary glands, or suspected stones or a nodule. Soft tissue ultrasound assesses subcutaneous changes, lumps, cysts and lymph nodes in any part of the body. Neither examination requires preparation.

The examinations are performed by Jacek Witkowski, MD, a specialist in radiology and imaging diagnostics, in adults and children from 11 years of age. Ultrasound in younger children (transfontanelle ultrasound, abdominal ultrasound in infants) is performed by a paediatrician as part of paediatrics and neonatology. Prices of the examinations are listed in the price list.
