Paediatric endocrinology and diabetology

Diagnosis and treatment of hormonal disorders in children

About the service

Paediatric endocrinology and diabetology deals with the diagnosis and treatment of hormonal and metabolic disorders and diabetes in children and adolescents. The care is comprehensive, taking into account the young patient’s lifestyle.

If needed, we also perform a thyroid ultrasound.

Who it’s for

  • Children and adolescents with hormonal disorders
  • Patients with growth and puberty disorders
  • Children with diabetes, obesity, insulin resistance

Scope

  • Endocrinology and diabetology consultation
  • Comprehensive hormonal and metabolic diagnostics
  • Thyroid ultrasound (if needed)

Growth disorders

A consultation is advisable when a child is noticeably shorter or taller than their peers, when the growth rate has slowed (a drop on the centile chart), or when the child’s height differs from what would be expected from the parents’ height. The doctor reviews the measurements in the child’s health booklet, the growth rate and bone age, and orders hormone tests if needed.

Early and delayed puberty

Reasons for a visit are signs of puberty in a girl before the age of 8 or in a boy before the age of 9, as well as their absence in a girl after 13 and in a boy after 14. The endocrinologist assesses the stage of puberty, orders tests and discusses the next steps with the parents.

Thyroid disease in children

Hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism, goitre, nodules and Hashimoto’s disease in children and adolescents. Diagnostics include hormone and antibody tests and, if needed, a thyroid ultrasound performed at Sonar Clinic. Treatment is managed and monitored over follow-up visits.

Diabetes and insulin resistance

A paediatric diabetology consultation covers type 1 and type 2 diabetes, prediabetes and insulin resistance, including in children who are overweight or obese. Increased thirst, frequent urination, weight loss despite a good appetite and drowsiness in a child are symptoms that require urgent assessment, ideally on the same day.

Overweight and obese children can be managed jointly with the doctor responsible for obesity treatment and a dietitian.

What the visit involves and what to prepare

The visit includes a history, measurement of height and weight, review of centile charts, an examination and a discussion of the results. It is worth bringing the child’s health booklet, previous test results, hospital discharge summaries and a list of medications taken. When it is worth having a child seen at all is described in the guide When should a child see an endocrinologist?.

Consultations are provided by Monika Seifert, MD, PhD, a specialist in paediatric endocrinology and diabetology. Visits are private, without a referral; current prices are listed in the price list.

Laboratory tests on site

Hormonal and metabolic tests before a visit or during treatment (TSH, FT4, glucose, HbA1c, insulin, IGF-1, thyroid antibodies) can be carried out on site and the results brought to the visit. Tests are provided without a referral, at a booked time, at the Sonar Clinic sample collection point; the collection fee is PLN 11 (PLN 20 for children up to 8 years of age), and test prices are listed in the sample collection point price list.
